West Metro excavation work is well underway

Metro traffic in the Helsinki Metropolitan Area is expanding westward.

“Excavating the access tunnels is slow because we can only do it in one direction. The metro tunnel is created faster because we can excavate two metro tunnels in both directions. When the excavation work is proceeding at its fastest along the whole route, we can create well over one kilometer of metro tunnel in a month,” explains Matti Koskinen, Managing Director of Länsimetro Oy.

At the moment the West Metro has eight construction sites in operation, with four located both in Helsinki and Espoo. The City of Espoo is also constructing two access tunnels in Tapiola. The remaining tunnel projects will also start in 2011.

Excavation work for the West Metro will be completed in 2013. Construction work on the stations will commence immediately after the excavation, with the first station projects already starting in 2012. This will be followed by track construction and the installation and testing of the automatic trains. The West Metro will be completed at the end of 2015.
