Top Finnish medical researchers awarded ERC Advanced Grants

Three Finnish professors have received European Research Council funding for research into cancer and cardiovascular diseases, mitochondrial disease pathogenesis and treatment, neurodegeneration and obesity.

Professor Anu Wartiovaara was given funding for her research project "Metabolic consequences of mitochondrial dysfunction", which aims to clarify mitochondrial contribution to obesity and thinness, using carefully characterized mitochondrial disease and obese patient materials, and genetically modified disease models. The project has potential for major breakthroughs in the fields of mitochondrial disease pathogenesis and treatment, neurodegeneration and obesity.

ERC Advanced Grants allow exceptional established research leaders in any field of science, engineering and scholarship to pursue frontier research of their choice. They aim to encourage risk-taking and interdisciplinarity, and supports pioneering frontier research projects. The ERC selected a total of 266 researchers from 26 countries for Advanced Grant funding from a total of 2009 applications. The funding is a maximum of EUR 2.5 million for a maximum period of five years.
