The winning game – positive outlook for sports retail market in Finland

Intersport Finland Oy’s President Juha Nurminen says that the outlook for the sports retail market in Finland is good.

The positive growth forecast is based on the public’s increased appreciation of well-being, a more active and wealthier elderly population, and the willingness of companies to invest in employee wellness.

According to Nurminen, electric-powered bicycles will be a hit in the coming years. Cross-country skiing, running and indoor sports for women will also be increasingly popular.

Intersport Finland also includes Budget Sport retail outlets. Nurminen points out that Budget Sport’s sales grew by 13% in 2010.

In 2009, the Intersport chain in Finland posted 305 million euros in sales, which accounts for about 30% of total sporting goods sales nationwide. The annual per capita expenditure on sporting goods and apparel is 180 euros in Finland.
