Record number of cruise liners expected in Helsinki this summer

A water bus, free mobile app and other new services will be available for cruise passengers moored in Hernesaari.

Helsinki is expecting about 270 visiting cruise ships this summer, with almost 370,000 tourists arriving here mainly from the United States, Britain and Germany. The busiest days will be the 4th and 22nd of June with six cruise liners arriving on both days bringing 6500-7500 tourists to the city.

Most of the ships will be moored in Hernesaari, which will have a new water bus service to the city centre and the historic Suomenlinna fortress, as well as a new square with retail facilities and that can also be used for organising events. The pedestrian route from Hernesaari to the city centre will be signposted. Visitors can also download a free mobile app that gives information about the sights along the route, produced by Forum Virium Helsinki and the Helsinki City Tourist & Convention Bureau.

In the summer of 2012 visitors to Hernesaari can also enjoy the quintessential Finnish sauna experience in a new centre featuring four wooden saunas, a cafe and a restaurant.
