Helsinki set for record tourism year

Tourism increased by a record 8% in the first half of the year and the summer season has been busier than last year.

Helsinki has enjoyed a booming summer tourism season with the city’s hotels often fully booked and the ports busier than last year. This year 270 cruise ships are bringing in 370,000 tourists to Helsinki, compared to 247 cruise ships and 344,000 visitors last year. The majority of the passengers on the cruises are from the United States, Britain and Germany.

According to Laura Itävaara, communications coordinator for the Helsinki City Tourism & Convention Bureau, many cruise passengers on a short visit take a trip to the Nuuksio National Park or spend the day in the city centre. Tourists spending a longer period in Helsinki enjoy exploring different districts of the city like Arabia, Kallio or Punavuori, which is especially popular with the younger generation. Whether young or old, most tourists also like to take in the major sights in the city like the Helsinki Cathedral.

Tourism in Helsinki increased a record 8% during the first half of the year compared to the same period one year ago, according to Itävaara. The most common period of stay for tourists visiting Helsinki is two days and August is the busiest tourism month of the year. The five summer months of the year bring in as many tourists as the seven winter months.
