The mission of the Finnish Metals and Engineering Competence Cluster (FIMECC) is to boost cooperation between companies and research institutes. According FIMECC’s CEO Harri Kulmala, the companies participating in FIMECC report business benefits of almost EUR 100 million after four years of involvement in the cluster’s research activities. FIMECC’s strategic research themes and program coverage include Service Business, User Experience, Global Networks, Intelligent Solutions, and Breakthrough Materials.
“FIMECC’s UXUS program has been an important channel during our development of a new generation ship command bridges and different kinds of vessels,” says Sauli Eloranta, CEO of
Rolls-Royce Finland Oy. “The program has created a good buzz between companies and researchers that increases innovations.” As a global company, Rolls-Royce could choose any location for its R&D work, but FIMECC’s activities present a strong reason for selecting Finland as a R&D investment location.
Prima Power, a leading specialist in machines and systems for sheet metal working, and the Machinery Division of the Italian Prima Industrie Group, has also benefited from participating
in FIMECC. “We have designed, productized and launched a remote management service based on FIMECC’s FutlS program,” says Juha Mäkitalo, CEO of Prima Power Finland.
ABB Marine and Cranes Service also give credit to FIMECC for contributing to the company’s growth. “We have developed our service offering and organisational functions in the research programs of FIMECC and other companies in the Strategic Centres for Science, Technology and Innovation (SHOK),” says Richard Windischhofer, Business Development Manager, Global Service, ABB Marine and Cranes Service.
