Tampere’s new Central Arena and Deck can be constructed in an eco-efficient way, according to the newly published environmental report by the City of Tampere and the construction company NCC. Constructed above a railway line, the buildings will comply with the highest standards of BREAAM certification, which is the most widely used environmental assessment method for buildings. It sets the standard for best practice in sustainable design and has become the de facto measure used to describe a building's environmental performance.
There is only one other sports arena in the world which has been built according to such environmentally friendly specifications. The new arena will be 30% more energy efficient than Tampere’s Hakametsä hall or Espoo’s Barona arena. Traffic emissions will fall by 20% per ice hockey match thanks to the arena’s location. The building is planned to be self-sufficient in electricity thanks to the use of solar panels, and eco-efficient district cooling will be piped in from the nearby Näsijärvi lake.
