Carlson Wagonlit Travel acquires Finnish market leader Kaleva Travel

Global business travel leader CWT will benefit from Kaleva Travel’s strong local service in five countries, as well as its know-how in utilizing online and mobile technology.

Carlson Wagonlit Travel (CWT), a global leader specializing in business travel management, has acquired Kaleva Travel, the Finland-based travel management company with which CWT has partnered since 1995 to serve clients in several key European markets. With annual sales volume of more than USD 450 million and 450 employees, privately owned Kaleva Travel is Finland’s largest travel agency, specializing in business travel.

CWT’s business relationship with Kaleva Travel has expanded geographically over the years and today includes partner operations in Estonia, Finland, Latvia, Lithuania, and Romania. As a result of this acquisition, CWT now has a wholly owned presence in each of these important markets. CWT is also especially interested in Kaleva Travel’s know-how in utilizing online and mobile technology in travel.

CWT will greatly benefit from Kaleva Travel’s market-leading position and strong local service in the five countries where the agencies formerly partnered. “This acquisition represents a natural progression of the long-standing relationship CWT has enjoyed with Kaleva Travel,” says Patrick Andersen, CWT executive vice president for the Nordic countries.

Mika Kiljunen, CEO of Kaleva Travel, will continue to lead the existing operations under CWT's ownership. “Our clients’ needs have expanded as companies of all sizes increasingly find themselves participating in a global economy. At the same time, expectations have increased as clients seek a true consultant to help guide their travel decisions,” Kiljunen explains. “CWT can help Kaleva Travel advance our capabilities in each of these areas given its global footprint, award-winning products and service, and proven track record with clients of all sizes."

CWT is a global leader specializing in business travel management, with a presence in nearly 150 countries. In 2009, the sales volume for the company’s wholly owned operations and joint ventures totalled USD 21.4 billion.
