Sales of daily consumer goods in Finland up by 1.7% in April

Convenience stores, large supermarkets and hypermarkets enjoy strong sales growth during the first part of the year.

Sales in April grew by 6.2% in convenience stores, 4.2% in supermarkets and remained at the same level as the year before in small stores and hypermarkets. Sales fell by 3.3% in small supermarkets. Prices increased by 4.4% according to the grocery trade price index, while the inflation rate for all consumer prices was 3.1%.

In the period January – April 2012, convenience stores increased their sales of daily consumer goods by an impressive 9.3% compared to the same period one year earlier. Large supermarkets enjoyed 8% growth in sales, while hypermarkets had 6% growth, small stores 3.3% and small supermarkets 0.5%.

The cumulative turnover of HoReCa wholesale trade among the members of the Finnish Grocery Trade Association was EUR 155.8 million in April 2012, which was 4.8% more than in April 2011. For the period January – April 2012, the turnover of HoReCa wholesale trade was EUR 600.4 million, representing an increase of 9.3% compared to the same period one year ago. There were two more business days in January – April 2012 than in 2011.
