The can factory will be located in premises formerly used by Philips to manufacture light fittings. Rexam will also construct around 10,000 m2 of warehouse facilities in addition to the pre-existing production and office facilities. Rexam’s acquisition of the facilities has been assisted by Mäntsälän Yrityskehitys Oy, a trade corporation owned by the municipality of Mäntsälä.
When completed, the factory will have two production lines and a capacity of approximately 1.35 billion 330ml and 500ml aluminium cans. The first production line is expected to start operations in the beginning of 2013 and the second in January 2014. The can factory will employ about 120 people, with recruitment managed by Adecco Finland Oy.
According to Rexam, the building of the plant will allow the company to serve growing customer demand in Finland and the Baltic states, to optimise logistics and to further enhance plant efficiency across its European beverage can network. The Nordic market has shown good growth in recent years and Finland has experienced a steady transition from glass bottles to can fillings. In the last five years, the beverage can’s share of the pack mix for beer in Finland, for example, has grown from just above 10% to more than 60%.
