A major new shopping centre called Idea-Areena will be constructed in Lempäälä, located south of the city of Tampere in Finland. YIT Rakennus Oy has signed an agreement with Kiinteistö Oy Lempäälänportti and Capman Oyj for the contruction of the new shopping centre.
According to Ilkka Kääriäinen, regional director at YIT Construction, construction work on the new shopping centre is expected to start in early 2012. The total investment is estimated to be about EUR 100,000 million. The maximum surface area of the centre will be 110,000 square metres.
Juha Koivurinta from Kiinteistö Oy Lempäälänportti says that the project has attracted a lot of interest. The new shopping centre will host car dealers, machinery, spare parts and hardware retailers, and will not be competing with the nearby Ideapark shopping centre.
The population of the Tampere region is forecast to increase by 90,000 people by the year 2030. Jari Alanen, regional director of major Finnish retail group Kesko, believes that the current plans for new shopping centres in the region are not over-ambitious. However, he thinks that the shopping centres should be slightly different from each other, so customers have complementary alternatives for doing their shopping.
