Japanese DENSO invests in Finnish MaaS Global with future of transportation in mind

Japan-based Tier-1 automotive company DENSO was one of the main investors in Finnish mobility as a service company MaaS Global’s recent funding round. Even though, there is plenty of discussion around the likes of autonomous vehicles, the future of transportation does not end there, as also new services will further reshape the way we move.

During the latest years, Tier-1 automotive suppliers have become increasingly interested in intelligent mobility and transportation. Japanese DENSO does not make an exception. One of the world’s largest automotive component manufacturers is now ready to play an active role also within the emerging mobility service market.

In this regard, DENSO’s latest move saw daylight when the company decided to take part in Finnish MaaS Global’s recently finished funding round. The round attracted quite naturally MaaS Global’s existing shareholders, but there were some significant newcomers as well – including DENSO.

An ongoing transformation in the mobility market

According to DENSO, the investment contributes to the company’s core mission of realizing a future sustainable automotive society.
"We at DENSO are very happy about our continued collaboration with the FINPRO organization who, through their extensive network, have been able to provide great value to us as we move forward with our planned expansion of our development ecosystem," said Kazu Matsugatani, Executive Director DENSO Corporation. "We are now exploring beyond the vehicle "shell" to create new value and solutions for the future new mobility society and users, and we are very excited about the potential opportunities provided by Finland's Tech Community and Mobility Ecosystems development initiatives here."

Keeping this in mind, investing in MaaS Global seems quite logical. After all, the Finnish company’s Whim mobility service is a perfect example of the fruits of Finland’s intelligent transportation ecosystem. The service combines public transportation with taxis and private cars into a single application. For the users, this means tailored ways to travel with just one ticket.

Finnish MaaS ecosystem at a glance

The investment news were warmly welcomed also at the Finnish trade promotion agency Finpro, which provided relevant market information and advised DENSO along the way.

“Globally, Finland is one of the first countries to build up an ecosystem around the concept of intelligent mobility,” says Janne Kari, Senior Advisor at Finpro’s Invest in Finland. “The ecosystem brings together companies as well as public organizations that are working together in developing, trialing and implementing innovative mobility services. In addition to obvious ingredients like open data and APIs the Finnish ecosystem is supported by progressive regulation. The presence of major players like DENSO further strengthens our ecosystem.”
