IT start-up and sales boom in Finland

Ideas and technologies from Nokia are fuelling new companies and growth.

Many former employees of the Finnish mobile phone giant Nokia have established new technology companies. Nokia has licensed these entrepreneurs with the rights to continue developing the ideas and technologies they were working with while in Nokia, while holding on to its patents. The Finnish Funding Agency for Technology and Innovation and Technopolis Plc have funded 40 projects of which 22 are new companies.

There are many innovative Finnish companies doing business with ideas sourced from Nokia. For example, C2 SmartLight specialises in outdoor lighting, There Corporation is developing home energy management solutions, and Booxmedia is producing mobile television and video services. Other Nokia spin-offs include Finembe which focuses on security and remote monitoring equipment, and Lingsoft whose products and services are designed for the analysis, processing and utilisation of written and spoken language. PowerKiss produces wireless charging technology, while Thumbs-up Research is developing innovative user interface software and providing user experience and concept creation services.
