Saimaa Gardens, which will be a leading tourist and leisure time resort in the Nordic countries, is beginning to take shape near Lappeenranta in eastern Finland. By October 2011 three hotels and 63 holiday villas will be completed at the resort. In the future the resort will have up to 300 holiday apartments, 500 other holiday homes, a shopping centre, a Sport Motel, a port for 300 boats and a pay & play golf course. It is estimated that by the year 2020, the total investment in the area will be about EUR 200 million.
Holiday Club Saimaa is responsible for the resort’s hotels and apartments. According to managing director Vesa Tengman, 60% of the apartments have already been sold and the rest are expected to go by October 2011. About 70% of the buyers have been Finnish and the rest mainly from Russia.
Miriensis Oy is responsible for managing the Saimaa Gardens area. The company is owned by the Finnish companies Nortum Oy, Axis Partners Oy and the consulting firm Ilkka Hämäläinen Oy. Miriensis is looking for suitable investors for the 300 hectare area purchased by the City of Lappeenranta and has also invested in the resort’s holiday homes. According to managing director Ilkka Suominen, 55 holiday homes have been completed so far and they have all been sold.
Saimaa Gardens is located by the beautiful lake Saimaa, which is one of the biggest lake systems in Europe. The resort is near the Russian border and St Petersburg is just 240km away.
