Helsinki wants more townhouses

Thousands of townhouses will be built in Helsinki as the City Planning Department encourages more townhouse projects.

The first townhouse projects in the city are nearing completion. Many more will be implemented according to existing plans both in central Helsinki and the suburbs. About 7400 townhouses will be constructed in Östersundom in eastern Helsinki and perhaps 3200 more in the rest of the city.

According to the report, town planning should enable more townhouse projects both to the east and west of the city centre. The report also suggests that the central European model of townhouses should not be copied as such but rather Helsinki should be developing its own townhouse solutions.
