Helsinki set for record year in cruise ship tourism

Cruise ships are expected to bring more than 400,000 tourists to Helsinki this summer.

The number of cruise passengers visiting Helsinki is expected to increase to more than 400,000 during the summer. Helsinki's West Harbour is testing three automatic passport control points this month, which are designed to speed up passport formalities for visitors from outside the Schengen countries. This will be the first time that automated passport control is used in a sea port in Europe.

Helsinki is the World Design Capital this year and cruise liner visitors can enjoy a range of different design-themed events throughout the summer. A new marketplace has been developed to greet passengers whose ships are moored in Hernesaari. This summer will also see the introduction of a new water bus service from Hernesaari to the city centre.
