Growing tourism from Russia boosts investments in south-east Finland

Major investments are underway in tourism facilities, holiday accommodation and retail stores thanks to booming cross-border tourism.

Tourism investments worth EUR 120 million are ongoing in the city of Savonlinna, bringing thousands of bed spaces to the popular tourism location. A major tourism centre is also being constructed around a spa hotel in Rauha. The city of Mikkeli has also seen investments worth almost EUR 100 million in new pedestrian streets, shopping centres and parking facilities, primarily motivated by the rising number of Russian visitors.

The fast Allegro train connection between Helsinki and St Petersburg has increased passenger traffic by 41% this year. VR, the state-owned railway company in Finland, is aiming to reach a total of 290,000 passengers this year.
