Focus on better design creates new business opportunities in Finland

World Design Capital Helsinki 2012 project and a commitment to improving municipal services in Finland represent opportunities for international companies with design expertise.

The City of Lohja in southern Finland provides a good example of the types of services Finnish municipal authorities are currently looking to develop. Lohja is currently carrying out a project to boost its service provision to the local residents with the support of Tekes – the Finnish Funding Agency for Technology and Innovation. The project includes training the municipal employees in the concepts of process design and modelling with a view developing the city’s service processes.

The project is also examining how different services could be provided electronically, how services can be developed in a more user-centred way, how to utilise social media, how to develop cooperation models with local companies, and how to develop the city’s service offering to elderly population. The project is also training municipal employees to produce higher quality services and creating quality indicators for monitoring the services provision.
