innish consumers have consistently expressed strong confidence in the development of the country’s economy and in their own financial situation since the middle of last year. In April 2011 the consumer confidence barometer compiled by Statistics Finland stood at 22.7 for the Helsinki region and 17.8 for the country as a whole.
Consumers in the capital city area expressed strong confidence in the positive development of their own finances and opportunities to save money, with 5.1% expecting their financial situation to be much better in one year’s time. The corresponding figure for the rest of the country was 3.3%. Consumers living in the economically dynamic Helsinki region are traditionally more optimistic than in the rest of Finland. The population of the Helsinki region is growing by about 1% annually and is currently 1,353,000.
Finland’s retail trade has continued its good performance with 13.1% growth in sales during the first quarter of this year compared to the same period one year ago. Car sales have increased by a third, while the retail trade grew by 6.3% and the wholesale trade by 11.8%.
