Finnish city of Oulu is finalist for Intelligent Communities of the World award

Oulu is commended for its strategy of creating a local prosperity and inclusion using broadband and information technology.

Oulu was selected as a finalist thanks to its strong performance in all five areas. The international panel of judges also highlighted the well-organised cooperation between small and large companies in developing and offering services in Oulu. According to the Intelligent Community Forum (ICF), the Top Seven Intelligent Communities of the World represent the best practices in broadband deployment and use, workforce development, innovation, digital inclusion and advocacy that offer lessons to regions, cities, towns and villages around the world.

According to the City of Oulu, it has managed to create 18,000 jobs in high technology, thanks to risk-taking in education and strong public-private collaboration and despite the upheavals of the global economy. The City of Oulu has also created an intensive culture of use for information and communications technologies.

ICF’s experts will now conduct site visits to the seven finalists. The winner of the award will be revealed in New York in May 2012.
