Finland’s new fire regulations that came into effect in Spring 2011 make it possible to construct wood apartment buildings that are 3-8 stories high, provided they have automatic sprinkler equipment installed. This change is a significant boost to the construction of timber-frame apartment buildings in Finland, according to Mikko Viljakainen, director of wood construction at Finnish Forest Industries.
At the moment there are 34 wood apartment buildings in Finland with a total of 517 apartments. Seven other wooden apartment buildings are under construction and 11 other locations are in the planning stage, some of which are large-scale projects.
The government of Finland aims to increase the share of wood apartment buildings to 20% of all new apartment building construction by the year 2020.
