Finland to host European Institute of Technology ICT Unit

The European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT) is locating one of its information and communication technologies research units in Finland.

The Finnish unit of the EIT ICT Labs will be located on the Aalto University campus in Otaniemi. The founding members of the Finnish unit are Nokia, VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland and Aalto University.

EIT functions as a network, uniting research and educational institutes as well as businesses. It aims to connect world leading companies, globally renowned research institutes and top-ranked universities to speed up innovation and transform Europe into a knowledge society with an unprecedented proliferation of internet-based services.

The total budget of the Finnish unit for 2010-2014 is approximately EUR 100 million, no more than 25% of which comes from EIT funding. The remainder comes from participant funding, national funding and other EU funding.

According to EIT’s approved plan, there will be several hundred ICT researchers, experts and graduate students working at the EIT Otaniemi unit in 2013. In addition to Helsinki, EIT’s ICT network units will also be located in Berlin, Eindhoven, Paris and Stockholm.

Committed to an efficient open innovation model, EIT ICT Labs will generate faster transformation of ideas and ICT technologies into real products, services and business, boosting Europe’s future competitiveness in all sectors of society.
