The CleverHealth Network launched in September 2017 aims to meet the growing global demand for digital and artificial intelligence-based health solutions by bringing together Finnish health sector expertise with local and international companies. At the heart of the new ecosystem is the unique data lake of the Hospital District of Helsinki and Uusimaa (HUS), which companies can now access to develop innovations and research.
“The data will not be sold. Instead, we want to allow researchers and companies to join us in processing the data into new, better healthcare solutions in an environment that protects personal privacy and data security,” says Visa Honkanen, Director of Strategic Development at HUS.
In addition to HUS, there are currently 14 companies in the CleverHealth Network, including five SMEs and nine international companies: BCB Medical, BC Platforms, CGI, Elisa, Fujitsu, GE, IBM, Innofactor, Microsoft, Nokia, Noona, Planmeca, Reaktor and Tieto. The ecosystem is funded by Tekes – the Finnish Funding Agency for Innovation.
First projects underway
The CleverHealth Network is aiming for a turnover of EUR 11 billion and export earnings of EUR 7.7 billion for the companies in the ecosystem. The projects in the ecosystem will combine expertise from the corporate and health sectors with agile co-creation procedures. The first projects starting this autumn are focusing on acute leukemia, remote monitoring of gestational diabetes, and brain imaging analytics.
“The new ecosystem offers a great pathway for us to introduce innovations created by our Japanese healthcare unit and Fujitsu Laboratories to Finland in a customer-oriented manner. In addition, Fujitsu can offer a global channel for distributing the ecosystem’s solutions on all continents,” says Mikko Lampinen, Head of Public Sector and Healthcare sales at Fujitsu.
Innovation through collaboration
More international companies are welcome to join the CleverHealth Network, according to Nora Kaarela, Head of Industry, Health & Wellbeing, Invest in Finland, Finpro.
“They can easily establish their presence in Finland to co-develop, test and validate new solutions to be implemented in global scale. The CleverHealth network unites the most critical parties needed for healthcare innovation work: world-class leading experts in healthcare, quality health data and health technology expertise of Finnish companies,” she says.
“This is an excellent example of innovativeness and strong collaboration between the industry and healthcare providers, a framework set up to provide business value to global companies seeking the best partners for product and service co-development and validation.”
