The Finnish pension insurance company Etera is constructing three office buildings in the central Töölönlahti area of Helsinki. Töölönlahti is one of the biggest office construction projects in Finland. The construction work will be carried out by Lemminkäinen Talo.
The high level of interest in the properties has surprised Hannu Tarkkonen, Etera’s managing director. “Renting a property like this is a one-time opportunity for companies because there is very little new and modern office space available in the city centre,” he says. Work has already started on the first building which will be mainly occupied by Alma Media. The architectural competition for the Alma Media office building was won by JKMM Architects. Etera is also organising an architectural competition for the other two office blocks, with the results expected in autumn 2011. The buildings are planned to be completed by the end of 2013. The second building will house KPMG, which has about 500 employees in Helsinki.
“A new city centre is being constructed in the Töölönlahti area where future generations will also be working. With the help of the architectural competitions, we aim to find architectonically and functionally high level solutions for buildings that will be constructed on a very significant location of the cityscape. It is important that the office buildings will fit architecturally in the milieu and fulfil the ecological and environmental requirements,” says Tarkkonen.
