Silver deposit in northern Finland reveals even greater potential

The Swedish mining company Sotkamo Silver has conducted two geophysical surveys at Taivaljärvi, northern Finland, which show that the mineralization extends to a depth of at least 1000 metres. Earlier surveys have confirmed that the deposit continues to 550 metres.

“The results of these studies confirm our understanding that the Taivaljärvi silver deposit continues towards depth and strike, which clearly increases the potential of the mineralization and our expectations of the deposit,” says Timo Lindborg, CEO of Sotkamo Silver.

Sotkamo Silver carried out one audiomagnetotelluric survey (AMT) and one electromagnetic survey (Gefinex 400S) to investigate the depth-continuation of the Taivaljärvi silver deposit and related conductive structures of the bedrock. According to Sotkamo Silver, the Gefinex-survey also shows that the surveyed anomalous region lies between a 600 -1000 meters level and the strike length of the anomalous area is at least 1000 meters.

Pending environmental permits, Sotkamo Silver is planning to begin construction work on the mine later this year and to start operations in the winter 2013-1014. The initial life span of the mine was expected to be less than ten years but the new findings may significantly extend the life of the mine, according to Ilkka Tuokko, Managing director of the Finnish subsidiary Sotkamo Silver Oy.
