The Finnish company Rovio has already sold more than 6.5 million copies of the iPhone game, which is currently being downloaded 50,000 times every day.
Rovio was established in 2003 as Relude by three students from the Helsinki University of Technology. Since then the company has produced 52 games that have been installed more than 250 million times around the world. Rovio has generated revenue of USD 4.5 million without spending any money on advertising Angry Birds, according to Peter Vesterbacka, who heads Rovio’s North America operations.
The game first became popular in Finland within the social circle of its makers before spreading to Sweden and then taking the rest of the world by storm. Rovio’s objective is now to attract new users across the different mobile phone platforms, with a goal of reaching 100 million paid downloads.
Angry Birds is now being introduced on Palm and will soon also be available on Android. Rovio is also developing a version for Nokia’s new phones in the future. Angry Birds merchandise is also proving popular, according to Vesterbacka.
