VTT and Deinove work together in developing biofuel production methods

VTTPresident and CEO Erkki Leppävuori foresees the future benefit of the Deinol project also for the forest and paper industry. VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland and Deinove, a French specialist in the development and commercialization of environmentally friendly and high-performance processes for production of biofuels and chemicals, will begin co-operation.

The project, which runs under the title DEINOL, researches the production of ethanol from cellulose. The joint venture is based on Deinove`s previous research on the utilization of the Deinococcus bacteria in biofuel production.

The Deinococcus bacterium has an exceptional ability of natural digestion of biomass such as cellulose. Ten researchers from VTT will take part in the project. Finnish expertise is focused on second generation bioprocess technologies and the special knowledge of bioethanol production processes. Deinove will be in charge of the production of biofuels. VTT`s role in the project is to evaluate different bacteria strains and their suitability for producing ethanol.

- The Deinol Project will not only advance the production of biofuels, but it will also have an important role in the development of forest and paper industry and chemicals sector applications, notes Erkki KM Leppävuori, President and CEO of VTT.

The French-Finnish cooperation research will be executed in co-operation with CNRS (French National Centre for Scientific Research) and INSA (French Engineering University) research institutes. Also the sugar company Tereos will be involved in the project.
