Lapland’s Rollywood boom also boosts the tourism sector.

18/12/2009

Finland’s Lapland region is enjoying a film boom: more film and television crews from around the world are heading north than ever before.

French, Dutch, Croatian and Finnish film crews have been shooting everything from major films to television series, documentaries and adverts in the unique landscape of Finnish Lapland. A new studio being built for internationally financed fantasy film Nicolas North, starring Julianne Moore, has already been dubbed Rollywood, as Rovaniemi, the capital city of the Lapland province, plans to make the region into major centre for film production.

The numerous film productions are also boosting Lapland’s tourism sector. In the initial phase the film crews require accommodation, food, vehicles and many other local services. When the film, television series or music videos are released to the public, they inspire visitors to come and see Lapland for themselves. In the third phase new services and products based on the films can be created for the increasing numbers of people visiting the region.

In addition to the region’s natural charms, credit for the current film boom goes to the long-term work of LEO, a centre of expertise for tourism and experience management in Lapland established in 1999. The Finnish Lapland Film Commission has also been marketing the region to film, television and advertising producers since 2008.
