Qualcomm starts business in Finland

22/01/2009

Qualcomm, the world’s largest provider of wireless chipset technology, is starting operations in Finland.

Qualcomm is starting operations in Finland as a result of its recent acquisition of some graphics and multimedia technology assets, intellectual property and resources that were formerly the basis of AMD's handheld business.

AMD’s graphics processors for mobile phones were developed in Finland by the former company Bitboys. As a result of the acquisition, Qualcomm has now taken on the whole Bitboys team, according to Mikko Saari, Qualcomm’s new country director. He says that about 50 employees will move from AMD to Qualcomm in Finland.

Qualcomm’s acquisition shows that Finnish expertise in this field is still sought after despite the global economic downturn. The development of the graphics processors is no longer driven by games but by the user interfaces of smartphones, according to Saari.
