Finland relaxes retail opening hours

20/11/2009

Retail stores in Finland can now open on Sundays throughout the year.

In a long-awaited decision this week described by the Finnish media as “historic”, the parliament of Finland approved legislation allowing all retail stores to open on Sundays during the whole year. The relaxed store opening hours are good news for both consumers and the stores, according to Kauppalehti, one of the leading business newspapers in Finland.

The new opening hours are also a boost to the retail sector as a whole, which can now plan its business activities and develop logistics with a longer term perspective, according to Kauppalehti. The change also brings new business opportunities to the retail sector and has been accepted by the Service Union United PAM that represents employees in the private service sectors.

The new law is expected to come into force in early December 2009.
