Finnish biotechnology company acquired by Charles River Laboratories International

Finnish biotechnology company Cerebricon Ltd, based in Kuopio, has been acquired by the American company Charles River Laboratories International Inc, which is listed on NASDAQ.

Cerebricon focuses on the modelling of central nervous system diseases which is used in pharmaceutical development and medical device testing. Cerebricon has grown significantly in recent years and is a major service provider of to the international pharmaceutical and biotechnology industry.
As a result of the acquisition, Cerebricon becomes part of the Charles River Discovery and Imaging Services (DIS) group, which is a leading global provider of pharmacokinetics and imaging services. Cerebricon’s specialist knowledge of central nervous system diseases expands the group’s existing therapeutic areas of expertise that include oncology, cardiovascular, metabolism and inflammation.   

As part of a global service provider’s operations, Cerebricon will benefit from greater resources and distribution channels. “With the new arrangement Cerebricon can become part of an international listed company’s growth strategy and so achieve an even more important position as a producer of pharmaceutical development services. The ownership arrangement also gives us the opportunity to expand our current business and to continue growth in Kuopio, focusing on the region’s expertise in brain disease and imaging,” says Juha Yrjänheikki, CEO of Cerebricon.
