Snowpolis to research energy efficiency

02/10/2008

A pioneering Technology Park in central Finland contributes technological and ecological expertise for the sports and travel sectors.

Snowpolis Technology Park, which specializes in wellness, sports and the all-year winter, is launching a study into energy efficiency in Vuokatti, a major hub for the leisure and travel industry located in central Finland. One of the objectives is to form an overview of the energy saving opportunities in a region that includes the Vuokatti Sports Institute and a new Sokos hotel, as well as other recreational and holiday facilities.

According to Seppo Romppainen, Manager of Winter Technology at Snowpolis, energy efficient construction serves as a good shop window to the world in a location visited by many international sports people. Vuokatti hosts the world’s first ski tunnel, which has snow throughout the year and whose training facilities attract skiers from all over the world.

Snowpolis brings together a total of 31 companies, educational and research institutions under the same roof, including the Department of Sports Technology of the University of Jyväskylä, the Department of Sports Measurements of the Measurement and Sensor Laboratory of the University of Oulu, the Center for Wireless Communication (CWC) of the University of Oulu, the Department of Travel and Tourism of Kainuu Vocational College, and Into-House.

Managing Director Antti Leppävuori hopes that Snowpolis will develop “into a technology village in a travel setting”, where the research capacity and know-how of the technology park can make a significant contribution both in the local economy and internationally. Snowpolis has been selected by FinPro to lead the team to export Finnish sports construction know-how to the 2014 Winter Olympics that will be held in Sochi, Russia.
