Finland’s IT market to grow by one percent in 2009

25/11/2008

Despite the uncertain economic outlook, Finland’s IT market will grow by almost 4% in 2008 and by 1% next year, according to a forecast by research company Market-Visio.

The sales of IT hardware is expected to be most affected by the weakening economic outlook, while the sales of software and IT services will continue to grow in 2009, albeit at a slower rate than in 2007 and 2008.

Some sub-sectors, especially in the IT services market, will actually be boosted by the economic downturn, according to Susanna Bairoh, director of research at Market-Visio. For example, as organisations strive to become more efficient and control costs, this will increase interest in outsourcing services.

“According to our research, many companies still believe that the current economic situation will not have a significant impact on IT investments in 2009,” says Bairoh. Nevertheless, she also points out that the current economic crisis includes so many open questions and variables that the outlook and forecasts can change quite quickly in either direction.

Market-Visio measures the value of the IT market by end user spending, which means the amount of money spent on hardware, software and external services by companies, other organisations and households.

Market-Visio predicts that the growth of Finland’s IT market will reach almost 4% in 2008, reaching a total of EUR 5.6 billion. The value of the market in 2007 was about EUR 5.4 billion.

“Our current view is that the hardware market will fall next year but start growing in 2010,” says Bairoh.
