The forestry, chemical and mineral sectors are the major contributors.
Finnish industry invested a total of EUR 142 million in environmental protection in 2006, according to the latest research findings by Statistics Finland.
The most significant investments focused on air quality, comprising 40% of the total, followed by waterways protection with 30%. Waste disposal services attracted 28% of the investment, with a similar amount also spent on land and ground water protection.
Analysed by a sector, the biggest investor was the forestry industry, where the cellulose and paper companies spent EUR 46 million, mainly on the protection of the waterways. The chemical and mineral sectors emerged as the second largest environmental investor with EUR 44 million.
Almost all the industrial sectors made substantial investments to improving air quality, with the energy sector leading the way with 90% of its environmental spending directed to this goal. The total operational costs caused by environmental protection activities amounted to slightly over EUR 500 million in 2006.
Statistics Finland has been collecting data on environmental spending by the industrial sector since 1992.
