The Helsinki University of Technology (TKK) has published a thousand doctoral theses online.
Since 1911, TKK has published more than 2500 doctoral theses, of which about 40% are now available online. In recent years, about 98-99 of TKK’s dissertations have been published electronically, which is not only the best result in Finland and but an excellent achievement internationally.
The Main Library handles the electronic publication of dissertations, which are available to the scientific community and the general public through Diss, TKK’s service for electronic dissertations.
The electronic dissertations service is OAI compliant (Open Archives Initiative Protocol for Metadata Harvesting). For example, the theses can be found through the OAISTER and DART web services.
The Main Library has received enquiries about the dissertations from South America, Africa and Asia, among other places. According to statistics, the main library was visited about 15 million times in 2007, with the Diss service making up about 65% of this figure.
