The strategic centres offer top research institutes and companies a new way of carrying out close and long-term cooperation.
The new Strategic Centres for Science, Technology and Innovation are developing rapidly in Finland. The Forestcluster Ltd was the first to take off, now followed by Tivit Ltd for the ICT sector and Fimecc - the Finnish Metals and Engineering Competence Cluster. Also, the energy and environment strategic centre CLEEN Ltd is at the establishment phase and the health and well-being and the built environment centres are being prepared.
The strategic centres offer top research institutes and companies a new way of carrying out close and long-term cooperation. The participants agree on a joint research plan, which aims to meet the companies' application needs within a five to ten year period.
The Finnish Funding Agency for Technology and Innovation Tekes has supported the creation of the strategic centres, developed the preconditions for their operations and encouraged them in the development of their operations.
Tekes also finances the centres’ research programmes and projects. In addition to Tekes, other funding sources include companies, the Academy of Finland and the EU's Seventh Framework Programme.
