PRESS RELEASE, December 3, 2008

The European Environmental Press Award – Innovation for Europe is an annual event organised by the European Environmental Press, an association of 17 sector journals with a combined readership of 450,000 environmental professionals. It is run in collaboration with the French trade show Pollutec and endorsed by the EFEAP, the European Federation of Associations of Environmental Professionals.

Top scores

St1 Biofuels scored top points from the jury panel for the originality of its fuel from waste concept, the innovative design and the progress the company has made in developing the technology. The panel also praised the fact that the company solved an important environmental problem and had the potential to make a real impact in Europe. In addition, the fuel from waste technology can also be exploited by third parties who can benefit from a technology that is reliable, efficient and of high quality.

The St1 Biofuels’ award winning Etanolix® technology is a unique way to produce transportation ethanol from organic waste while having the capability to produce animal feed and fertilizer as by-products. The technology uses the concept of dispersed production, where the production and dehydration of bioethanol are separated. Etanolix® produces ethanol from waste rather than competing for food crops.

As a small scale modular technology, it is easy-to-build and can be sited near to the waste source to optimize transportation. Food-industry side streams and waste are used as feedstock. Process energy consumption is minimal and is produced from a renewable source.

International growth in sight

St1 Biofuels has experienced rapid acceptance of its technology in Finland with three plants already in action and two new units entering production by the first half of 2009 alone. Next year also a new plant type BionolixTM will be introduced that will use household biowaste as feedstock. The technology has the potential to make a significant contribution to global fuel requirements with local production while tackling the increasing amounts of waste.

The company is seeking partners to establish waste based ethanol production utilizing patented Etanolix® technology globally through licence and partnership agreements and it has already signed letters of intent to establish joint ventures in Germany and Japan. Suitable partners to exploit this technology include established businesses in petroleum retail, waste utilization and the food industry.
