The global market research company IDC forecasts that Finland’s IT-markets will grow by 1.4-3.4% during 2009, and expects the final figure to be at the high end of the forecast.
Finland’s expected growth is in sharp contrast to the situation facing IT-markets in the rest of Western Europe, which IDC predicts will face a downturn of 1-3% in the coming year. According to IDC, the downturn will affect IT equipment and project services more than IT management services and telecommunications services.
According to IDC, the markets will recover in due course. There may already be positive signs at the end of 2009 but IDC predicts that the real turning point will take place in early 2010 at the earliest.
“Historically, all crises have shaken the competitive map of the IT sector and made new players into market leaders. The success stories of the next period of recovery are those who have invested in innovation rather than cost saving activities,” says Nils Molin, who leads IDC’s European consultancy.
IDC believes that the secret to success lies in the development of open innovation networks. Cooperation between customers and other actors in the sector is not only a cost-effective way to create innovations, but also a good way to improve the applicability and acceptance of the innovations.
