Helsinki University of Technology (TKK) and the technology licensing organisation of the University of Tokyo, Toudai TLO Ltd., signed an agreement to market each other's inventions to industry in their home countries. The agreement was signed during the visit of President
Hiroshi Komiyama of Tokyo University to Otaniemi.
The collaboration with Toudai will open doors to Japanese companies for TKK. Founded in 1988, Toudai is the largest and most successful of the technology licensing organisations owned by Japanese universities: it holds 200 patents and had a turnover of EUR 16.7 million in 2007. Toudai's clientele includes several leading Japanese companies.
The Tokyo office of Tekes (the Finnish Funding Agency for Technology and Innovation) contributed significantly to the conclusion of the agreement. The Otaniemi International Innovation Centre, which will also see to the implementation of the agreement, represented TKK in the negotiations.
