Forest industry makes good use of Finnish mobile technology

24/10/2008

MHG Systems, a Finnish information technology service company which specializes in managing field work, has developed its forest management system that extends all the way to the mobile phone.

From the different industrial sectors in Finland, it is the forest industry that makes the most out of new mobile technology according to a study by VAMOS – Value Added Mobile Solutions programme of the Finnish Funding Agency for Technology (Tekes).

In the forestry sector, 68% of the companies make use of one or more mobile application for implementing their operational systems. This does not include the normal calls, text messages and email that are used by almost every company in Finland.

More than half of the companies in the energy sector and the transport and logistics sector also make use of mobile solutions. About 40% of the companies in the metal and construction industries also utilize mobile solutions.

The results clearly show that mobile solutions are enjoying a strong period of growth. More and more companies are starting to use them, while companies already using them are increasing their number of mobile solutions and their number of users. Companies view mobile solutions as a way of cutting costs and also as a way of making their employees’ work more convenient.

More than 400 companies participated in the study conducted by Market-Vision. The study also revealed a group companies which is not using any mobile applications and that only a fifth of the companies had developed a written strategy for developing the use of the mobile applications.

Tekes launched VAMOS in 2005 in cooperation with firms and research institutions. The programme aims to find ways to utilize the newest mobile technology solutions. VAMOS focuses on implementing wireless technology solutions in industry, transportation, construction and services.
