A major European research programme on high speed data networks known as 100GET is expanding to Finland.
The arrival of the 100GET (100 Gbit/s Carrier-Grade Ethernet Transport Technologies), research programme represents a further boost to Finland’s expertise in this field, with concomitant benefits for the development of the country’s IT infrastructure and business sector.
The research that will be carried out in Finland is funded by the Finnish Funding Agency for Technology and Innovation (TEKES). According to TEKES, the research is related to the network architecture and systems, particularly on the research and definition of protocols. Finland also has specialist know-how in Ethernet technology on which the new generation of high speed optical fibre networks is based.
According to the 100GET programme, the expected strong growth of traffic in data networks combined with high pressure on transport costs will lead to a strong demand for the next generation of Ethernet technology in the near future.
100GET is one of the biggest ever information transfer research projects in Europe, whose three-year programme involves almost 40 information network solution providers and research institutes, and a budget of EUR 63 million.
