Karolinska Institutet and Turku Science Park establish joint venture

Biocelex to offer early-stage funding solutions and innovation development services

According to an article published in the Turun Sanomat newspaper on 29th August, Biocelex Oy, a joint venture between Turku Science Park and Sweden’s Karolinska Institutet (KI), started operation on 1st September 2007. Kai Lahtonen M.Sc. (Econ.), M.Sc. (Chem), formerly Managing Director of Turku Bio Valley Ltd, is the new company’s President and CEO. Quoted in Turun Sanomat, Mr Lahtonen said that KI’s interest in Turku’s biosector is wide-ranging, with a clear focus on investment opportunities. Karolinska Institutet is one of Europe's largest medical universities and Sweden’s largest centre for medical training and research.

 
Also quoted in Turun Sanomat, Ilkka Kouvonen, Managing Director of Turku Science Park, said that the joint venture would have many benefits. “We’ll now be able to select projects from a larger range of programmes, and we’ll also have access to Karolinska Institutet’s expertise and its global brand.” 

According to Turun Sanomat, cooperation between Karolinska Institutet and Turku Science Park has been ongoing since the spring of this year, when the intention to establish a joint venture was first made public. Turku Science Park has a 70% stake in Biocelex, which is headquartered in Turku’s PharmaCity. 

According to Biocelex, its offering to companies operating in the Life Sciences sector in the Baltic sea region includes early-stage funding solutions and innovation and business development services, with a particular focus on activity in Finland. In innovation development, Biocelex will be adapting and applying the Karolinska Institutet’s world-famous innovation system.
