Estonian company wins contract for road maintenance in western Finland

12/09/2006

AS Teho hopes to further expand its Finnish operations.

According to an article published in Helsingin Sanomat at the end of August, the City of Kankaanpää and the Municipality of Veteli in the west of Finland have hired AS Teho, an Estonian contractor, to maintain roads in the two communities. This is the first time a non-Finnish company has been given responsibility for road maintenance in Finland. A total of some 1500 kilometres of road is included in the contract.

For many years, Finland has assisted Estonia in developing its road administration and traffic safety systems. The origins of AS Teho, now an Estonian family enterprise, lie in a municipal organisation which was responsible for part of the sanitation services in the City of Tallinn. Quoted in Helsingin Sanomat, Heikii Anipai, one of the company’s owners, said that AS Teho has ordered new vehicles and equipment for the Finnish contract, and that work on them is currently being completed at the Sisu Auto factory in Finland.

According to Helsingin Sanomat, AS Teho hopes to expand its Finnish operations further by winning another two regional contracts. Finnish project managers have already been hired for the Kankaanpää/Veteli contract which will begin in October, and AS Teho will employ many of the same subcontractors that previously worked for the Finnish Road Enterprise. According to Mr Anipai, some 30 Finns will be working for the Estonian company.
