“Local people are the key to success and regional recognition.”
According to articles published in the Kauppalehti and Taloussanomat newspapers in the middle of June, Avaya Inc., a world leader in Internet Protocol (IP) telephony systems, communications software applications and services, has established a subsidiary in Finland. According to Kauppalehti, setting up local operations is part of Avaya’s strategy to achieve growth in Europe.
Quoted in Kauppalehti, Lars Steen Jørgensen, Avaya’s Nordic Manager, said “We’ve already been operating in Denmark and Sweden for a long time. Now we’ve opened offices in Oslo and Helsinki. We need local people because they are the key to success and regional recognition.” According to Kauppalehti, 41 per cent of Avaya’s global business comes from contact-centre operations, while IP telephony forms the company’s second-largest operational sector. According to Mr Jørgensen, Avaya’s target is to be number two in both these market segments by 2009.
Quoted in Taloussanomat, Jorma Teeriaho, Managing Director of Avaya Finland, said “Looking at the way that IP and telecommunications are now converging, this is a good time to enter the Finnish market”. In Kauppalehti, Mr Teeriaho was quoted as saying “It’s quite clear that there is room for Avaya in Finland’s telecommunications market. Customer service needs are growing as a result of the demand for contact-centre solutions, and communication solutions that combine IP and mobile networks can now be counted as a specific cost for companies with international operations.”
Strategic collaboration with Nokia
In June 2005, Avaya and Nokia announced a strategic collaboration to jointly address the emerging market for enterprise Fixed to Mobile Convergence (FMC) voice solutions based on open industry standards. Commenting in Taloussanomat on this aspect of the company’s operations, Mr Teeriaho said “Nokia is a very important strategic partner for us. Having a presence in Finland means we can serve both Nokia and our other Finnish clients better”.
Avaya Inc. designs, builds and manages communications networks for more than a million businesses worldwide, including 90 per cent of the FORTUNE 500®. According to Taloussanomat, Avaya’s turnover in 2005 totalled EUR 3,900 million and the company has over 20,000 employees in more than 50 countries.
