Finland's largest industrial sector is technology based and growth in recent years has been rapid. International success is the result of both long-term investments in R&D and the ability to react in a flexible way to sudden changes in market conditions. Many companies operating in this sector are Finland's leading exporters and internationally recognised as innovative pioneers.

Companies engaged in electronics and electrotechnical activities generate innovative solutions which are employed in production processes all over the world, from underground trains to windpower plants, from space technology to sports and medicine.

The metals sector includes both metals manufacture, the further refining of steel and copper products, zinc and nickel for use in the machine, vehicle, construction, electronics and electrotechnical industries, and mechanical engineering. Finnish metal processing is well known for its efficient utilisation of energy and raw materials, and holds world-leading positions in a number of processes. More than half the world's copper and a third of all nickel is manufactured using flame melting technology developed by Finns. State-of-the-art cruise ships are built in Finland's shipyards.

The chemical industry is Finland's third-largest industrial sector. The range of products manufactured is huge, with most of them being used in other industries, especially forestry and agriculture. Products produced include plastics, paints, oil products, pharmaceuticals, environmental products and petrochemicals.

There will always be room for new ideas, new professionals and new companies. In the next ten years, tens of thousands of new technological opportunities are certain to open up for innovators and the companies they work for.
